Opening Date for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Announced

This is it. The moment Star Wars fans have been waiting for. Today during an earnings call, Disney executives announced the opening dates for the highly anticipated Galaxy’s Edge expansion at both Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World. However, the land will open in phases to accommodate the high demand. Millenium Falcon: Smugglers Run will open at Hollywood Studios on August 29th, 2019. The land‘s second attraction will open later in 2019, with no confirmed date yet.

The land’s two main attractions will be Rise of the Resistence and Millenium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run. Rise of the Resistance, will place guests in the middle of an epic space battle aboard one of the First Order's Starships. Disney has claimed this is, 'one of the most advanced and immersive experiences ever undertaken by Walt Disney Imagineering.' We’ve also learned that despite this being the more family-friendly attraction of the two, it will have a height requirement of 38”. This is similar to Slinky Dog Dash, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom and Kali River Rapids at Animal Kingdom.

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run is a level of guest participation in a ride that we haven’t done,” says Robin Reardon, portfolio executive producer, Walt Disney Imagineering. “When you step into that cockpit as the only flight crew of the only Millennium Falcon for the day that’s going on that mission, that’s a pretty amazing leap in terms of storytelling from the very beginning. And the payoff and participatory nature of the experience are, so far, unparalleled.”

There is no doubt this is going to be the more intense attraction of the two in that it will have a height requirement of 40”. This is similar to many thrills rides at Disney World such as Tower of Terror, Test Track, Big Thunder Mountain and Splash Mountain. When Millenium Falcon opens in August, it won’t offer Fastpass+ Reservations. Once the land is completely open, FP+ will be offered at both attractions.

The land will aslo feature an impressive lineup of food that will rival Satu’li Canteen in Pandora over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

On top of all that, the land will feature a marketplace selling mountains of Star Wars merchandise. From building your own droid at the Droid Factory or harnessing the power of kyber crystals to build your own lightsaber.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will feature unparalleled attractions, food and shopping. All completely immersed in the Star Wars universe. From my personal experience at the grand opening of Pandora, I will admit this phased opening idea is a good one. The park would be absolutley unbearable if it all opened at once. Disney has clearly considered what the overall guest experience would be and have certainly made a wise decision.
